Description
Apollo 17 was the last mission to land on the Moon and its primary mission was centered on geology; trying to find the proof that the Moon came from the Earth. Before heading to the Moon mission astronauts Eugene Cernan and Ronald Evans spent a good portion of their training in Arizona, with geologist and teacher Eugene Shoemaker, while astronaut Harrison Schmitt, already a geologist, went to astronaut camp.
Shoemaker had a theory that the Moon came from the Earth and if the astronauts could find the rocks he was looking for he could prove his theory. This may sound easy but the Moon is covered in fine dust so to find Shoemaker needed the astronauts to find took a keen eye and good training. In the end the astronauts found the rocks Shoemaker needed, proving that the Moon came from the Earth.
This painting shows Apollo 17 streaking through Earth's atmosphere with its payload of Moon rocks that eventually proved Shoemaker's theory of the Moon's origin.
