Description
The Service Module was the lifeblood of every Apollo missions. It held the fuel for maneuvering, getting into orbit and heading back to Earth. It also had 3 fuel cells (yes, fuel cell technology existed in the 60's) that powered the mission and storage tanks for oxygen and water. Communication with Earth was also dependent on the Service Module, achieved by a steerable S-band high-gain antenna.
Upon returning to Earth the Service Module detaches from the Command Module which takes the astronauts through the atmosphere while the Service Module burns upon reentry.
This painting depicts the Command Module in the background as it begins its descent back to Earth with the Service Module in the foreground, moments before it begins to burn up. It's kind of ironic to think that the great minds who designed and built the Service Module knew that a successful mission would end with its destruction.
