Description
Originating around the gulf of Mexico, the Red-eared Slider turtles are an introduced species in British Columba. Popular as pets, many have been released or have escaped into the wild in many parts of the world.
The red on the side of the head, the "ear" patch, distinguishes them from other similarly sized turtles such as the Western Painted Turtle and the Western Pond Turtle. They also have yellow stripes on the face and neck.
They enjoy sunbathing and can be seen resting on logs in many lakes and ponds. The name "slider" comes from their ability to slide into the water with ease.
